Esi chair
Furniture Design - Spectrum
Esi is a reclaimed chair from the 1980s, thoughtfully redesigned for modern spaces. Inspired by 1980s-era Miami color palettes, the Esi Chair uses modern design principles, technology and applications to evoke a vibrant mood in any space. The simplified design of the Esi Chair utilizes minimal components that fit seamlessly together in its construction, resulting in an intriguing, elegant furniture piece for a contemporary space.
The chair was discovered in a house before its demolition and was destined for the landfill, but the curious designers at Studio Rodrigo Buelvas saw an opportunity to salvage the chair, deconstruct it piece by piece, and create a better design. Eliminating the need for screws, fasteners and many components to construct the chair, the design was refined so the Esi Chair is composed of only three pieces that fit seamlessly together into one fluid, elegant piece of furniture. Inspired by 1980s Miami art and pop culture, the studio created a color palette and material treatment to evoke the vibrant gradients and color spectrum of a signature Miami sunset.
Through a modern design thinking process and an industrial designer’s lens, the Esi Chair came to life through multiple iterations and prototypes, resulting in a furniture piece that is truly a better design, better manufacturing process, and better exploration of materials.
We worked closely with a manufacturer to create a color application process that evokes the vibrant gradients and juxtaposing colors often seen in a Miami sunset. This innovative technique and process, as well as the color palettes, are used for the first time in the creation of the Esi Chair, making the piece a truly innovative and functional piece of art.
